Weekly Meal Planner with Grocery List

Pick seven dinners or spin for them, set how many people are eating, and the planner writes one shopping list for the week: every item added up across the nights that use it, rounded up to what a shop sells, and sorted by aisle. Print it on one page, or send the link.

Amounts are Homsy's own for a plain home version of each dinner, scaled to your number of people and rounded up to what a shop sells. Check them against your recipe.

Want the list on everyone's phone instead of the fridge? In Homsy, one action turns the week's planned recipes into items on a shopping list the whole household shares.

How the shopping list is worked out

Each of the hundred dinners carries a list of what a plain home version of it takes for four people, in grams, millilitres or pieces. These are Homsy's own working amounts, written for this tool. Nobody publishes one correct ingredient list for chicken fajitas, so nothing here is cited, and a recipe you cook from will differ.

The list is arithmetic in three steps. First, every amount is multiplied by your number of people divided by four. Second, the same ingredient is added up across every night that uses it — onions on Monday, Wednesday and Friday become one line. Third, and only then, the total is rounded up once to something a shop sells: whole pieces and bunches; cans, jars and cartons by their usual size (a can of tomatoes or beans is taken as 400 g, a carton of broth as a litre, a pack of tortillas as eight); and loose weights in steps of 50 g, or of 100 g above a kilogram. In US units, weights are whole ounces up to a pound and quarter pounds above it, and liquids are quarter cups, converted at 28.35 g to the ounce and 236.6 ml to the cup. Rounding once per item rather than once per dinner is what keeps a merged list shorter than seven lists stapled together.

Oils, dried spices, sauces and flour are listed without amounts under "Check you have", with the nights that use them. Salt, pepper and water are not listed at all. A night marked "No cooking" adds nothing. Spinning picks each open night uniformly at random from the dinners your filters leave, and does not repeat a dinner within the week while there are others to choose from.

Every figure above was read out of the code that runs on this page. Where a number is our own judgement rather than a published one, the note says so and cites nothing. Method last checked 28 September 2026.

Why one merged list beats seven recipes

Most weekly meal plans fail at the shop, not at the table. Seven dinners get written down on Sunday, and then somebody has to turn seven recipes into one list — and that is where the week breaks. Onions go on the list three times, or once when three dinners need them. The cans are guessed. The coriander for Wednesday is forgotten because it was never on paper. By Thursday the plan says curry and the fridge says otherwise.

A merged list fixes the one step that was doing the damage. Every item appears once, with the total the week needs, so the onions are counted and the cans are cans. Sorting it by aisle means one walk round the shop instead of three. And writing it for the right number of people stops the other failure: the plan that fed four people on paper and six in real life.

If you would rather build the week by hand first, our weekly meal plan template covers the layout and how to build a weekly family dinner planner covers the habit that keeps it going. For a whole week of breakfasts, lunches and dinners, use the meal planning generator; when the only question is tonight, the dinner randomizer answers it in one spin. And once the list exists, the shared grocery list apps guide covers keeping it where everyone in the house can add to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a weekly meal plan with a grocery list?

Put a dinner on each night — tap a night to choose one from the list, or press "Spin the week" and the planner fills every open night at random — then set how many people are eating. The shopping list under the board is written as you go: every ingredient of every dinner, added up across the nights that use it and sorted into the aisles of a shop. Print it, or copy the link and send it to whoever is doing the shop.

How does the planner work out the amounts?

Every dinner carries the amounts a plain home version of it takes for four people. The planner multiplies them by your number of people divided by four, adds the same item up across the week, and rounds the total up once to a step a shop sells: whole pieces, cans and jars, 50 g or quarter-pound steps. The amounts are our own working figures, not a recipe, so check anything that matters against the recipe you actually cook.

Is the weekly meal plan printable?

Yes. The white sheet on the page is the printed sheet: the seven dinners across the top and the whole shopping list below with a tick box by every item, on one page of A4 or US Letter with no dark background to use up ink. To keep a PDF, press Print and choose "Save as PDF" as the destination.

Can I share the plan with my partner or housemates?

Copy the link. The whole week — the dinners, the number of people and the units — is written into the address, so anyone who opens it sees the same board and the same list, and can change their own copy. There is no account and nothing to sign up for; the link is the save, so bookmark it if you want to come back to this week.

Can I plan for two adults, or a family of six?

Any number from 1 to 12. The amounts are written for four and scaled in proportion, so two people get half of every item and six get one and a half times — before the rounding up, which is why a list for two still says one onion and not half of one. Children usually eat less than adults; if yours do, set the number a little lower than the head count.

What if we are not cooking every night?

Mark the night "No cooking" — for leftovers, a takeaway or a night out. It stays on the board and on the printed sheet as a night off, and adds nothing to the shopping list.

Why are oil, spices and sauces listed without amounts?

Because almost nobody buys them for one week. Oils, dried spices, soy sauce, flour and the like are listed under "Check you have" with the nights that use them, so you can look in the cupboard before you go, but the planner does not guess a quantity of cumin. Salt, pepper and water are taken as given and not listed.

How is this different from the Meal Planning Generator?

The Meal Planning Generator plans breakfast, lunch and dinner for seven days and counts how many meals call for each ingredient. This planner does dinners only, and does the part the generator leaves out: real amounts for your number of people, merged into one list you can shop from. Use the generator when you want every meal of the day planned; use this when dinner is the problem.

Where do the dinners come from?

They are the same hundred dinners as the Dinner Randomizer, across six cuisines — Italian, Mexican, Asian, American, Mediterranean and Indian — each with its cooking time and effort. If you built a week on the randomizer, its "This week's dinners" panel opens that week here, shopping list included.
