Your Appliances

Why This Matters

Most people have no idea which appliances are costing them the most money. The tumble dryer that runs for an hour uses as much electricity as your TV running all day. An electric shower uses more power than almost anything else in your home — but only for minutes at a time.

Understanding your appliance costs isn't about guilt — it's about making informed decisions. Should you air-dry clothes or use the dryer? Is it worth upgrading to an A+++ rated fridge? How much is that old chest freezer in the garage actually costing you? These questions have real answers when you do the math.

The biggest surprise for most people is how much heating appliances cost. An electric space heater, an old immersion heater, or a tumble dryer can each add €200-400 per year to your bill. Small changes in usage patterns can save hundreds annually.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find my appliance wattage?
Check the label on the back or bottom of the appliance, the user manual, or search the model number online. Our presets provide typical wattages for common appliances, but your specific model may differ.
Why is my actual bill higher than the calculator shows?
The calculator shows running costs for listed appliances only. Your bill also includes standby power draw from devices in sleep mode, which can add 5-10% to your total. Additionally, some appliances draw more power during startup.
What is kWh and how does it relate to cost?
A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is 1,000 watts used for one hour. If your electricity costs €0.25/kWh and you run a 2,000W heater for 3 hours, that's 6 kWh = €1.50. The calculator does this math for all your appliances automatically.
Does standby mode cost money?
Yes. Devices in standby mode typically draw 1-5 watts continuously. A TV on standby 20 hours a day at 5W costs about €9/year. Across all devices, standby power can add €50-100/year to your bill.
