How the value is estimated

Value is quantity multiplied by an average price for the category, multiplied by a condition factor and then by a platform factor. The twelve category averages, per item, are: large electronics 80, baby gear 35, sports equipment 30, small electronics 25, kitchen appliances 20, tools 15, bags and accessories 12, clothes and shoes 8, children's clothes and toys 5, books 3, discs and games 2, and furniture 45. Condition multiplies by 1.0 for good, 0.6 for used and 0.3 for poor. Platform multiplies by 1.0 for eBay, 0.85 for Vinted and 0.75 for Facebook Marketplace — the ordering reflects reach against fees and haggling, not a fee schedule. Choosing charity leaves the value unmultiplied and relabels it as donated, so you can see what you are giving away.

Two other figures come out of the same table. Listing time is minutes per item by category, from two minutes for a disc to ten for furniture, totalled and shown in hours — that is the number that decides whether selling is worth doing at all. Weight is kilograms per item, totalled, and shown as what you are keeping out of landfill. The three items ranked at the bottom are sorted by value per minute of listing, which is a different question from value: a box of books can be worth more than a bicycle and still be the worse afternoon.

All thirty-six of those figures are ours. They are second-hand prices as we read the market, not scraped listings, and the spread on any real item is wide enough that a single average is only ever a rough total. A branded coat is not the same as any coat. Take the number as the order of magnitude of what is sitting in the spare room, which people almost always underestimate, rather than as a price list.
