How the cost is calculated

Two streams are added together. Occasional sitting is your hourly rate multiplied by the hours per sitting and the number of sittings a month. Regular childcare is the weekly hours multiplied by the rate and by 4.33, the average number of weeks in a month — using 4.33 rather than 4 is what stops a year of monthly figures coming out about a month short. The annual figure is the monthly total times twelve, and the three-year figure is that times three, on the reasoning that three years is roughly the stretch before school takes over.

If you enter one parent's monthly take-home pay, the tool subtracts the childcare from it and reports what is left along with the percentage of that salary childcare consumes. Above 70 per cent it says outright that the financial case for working is thin; between 50 and 70 it suggests looking at part-time or flexible hours. Those two thresholds are ours, and they are a prompt rather than advice — plenty of people rightly work through a year where childcare eats most of one salary, because the career on the other side of it is worth more than the year.

The comparison figures are the softest part of the page and they are ours: monthly costs for a nursery, a childminder and an au pair in six regions, from 400 for a German nursery place to 1,800 for an Australian one. They are round numbers meant to show the shape of the choice — that a nursery usually beats a sitter for one child and often loses for two or three — rather than local prices. Real costs move enormously by city, and by whether a place is subsidised. Employer taxes and insurance for a nanny you employ directly are not included anywhere in this calculation.

What childcare really costs over a year

Childcare can be one of the largest household bills, and because it is paid an evening at a time it is rarely added up. A "just a few hours a week" babysitter at €12/hour, 3 times a week for 4 hours, adds up to €7,488 per year.

The decision between babysitter, nursery, childminder, or au pair isn't just about cost — it's about flexibility, quality, and your family's specific needs. But understanding the real numbers is the essential first step.

Perhaps the most important calculation this tool provides is the net income analysis. When childcare costs consume 60-80% of one parent's take-home pay, the financial case for working becomes very thin. This isn't about whether parents should work — it's about making the decision with clear financial data rather than assumptions.

What is the average babysitter rate?
There is no single figure: rates move with the country, the city, the number of children and the sitter's experience, and big cities usually pay more. Ask two or three local parents or check a local sitting site, then enter that rate. The country you pick changes only the nursery, childminder and au pair figures you are compared against.

Is a nanny cheaper than daycare?
For one child, daycare is usually cheaper. With two or more children, a nanny or nanny-share can compete, because a nanny's rate does not double per child while daycare fees do. The calculator sets your own sitter cost beside our nursery, childminder and au pair figures; it has no separate nanny or per-child option.

What about au pairs?
An au pair is often the cheapest way to cover many hours a week, because the cost is a weekly allowance plus a room and meals; the rules on hours and pay are set by each country. The calculator uses round monthly figures of ours, from 350 to 600 by region. Au pairs are cultural exchange participants, not professional childcare providers, and come with hosting responsibilities.

Should I factor in tax and insurance?
If you employ a nanny or regular babysitter, many countries require you to pay employer taxes and provide insurance, and that can add a noticeable share to the hourly rate. The calculator does not include these costs, so check your country's rules and add them to the rate you enter.
