Age-appropriate chores

62 chores across 7 age bands. The ages a job is commonly started at, not an assessment of any child.

Ages 2 to 3

Done alongside an adult. Expect it slow, messy and half finished — at this age the point is joining in, not the result.

Ages 4 to 5

Two or three steps, remembered with a reminder. This is the age a picture on the chart earns its place.

Ages 6 to 8

Longer jobs, less watching. The work is real now, and so is redoing it in front of them — do not.

Ages 9 to 11

Most household jobs, to a reasonable standard, with the occasional reminder.

Ages 12 to 14

Adult-quality work on most of the house, plus the beginnings of running part of it.

Ages 15 to 17

The practice years. These are the jobs that have to be automatic before somebody moves out.

Adults

The jobs that run the household rather than tidy it. A chart with no adult row on it teaches the wrong lesson.
